The Iconic 5: Hockey’s Mount Rushmore
In the annals of hockey history, certain names stand out like beacons, their brilliance illuminating the sport and leaving an indelible mark on generations of fans. These are the individuals who have not only dominated the game but have also shaped its culture and defined its legacy. They are what I call the “Iconic 5”: Wayne Gretzky, Bobby Orr, Mario Lemieux, Sidney Crosby, and Connor McDavid.
There has always been and will always continue to be debate and different perspective on this topic but let me walk through in this (rather long) article the reason behind my take and the reason for this article. I will garner to say 95% of you will agree with 3 of the 5 while 2 current players I have listed there will be much debate. And before someone wants to talk about how much hockey I have watched in my life or when. I started in 1978 but followed religiously since 1980. Let’s take some time and discuss each one of these players attributes and accomplishments.
The Great One, a moniker bestowed upon him with reverence, is synonymous with hockey excellence.His record-breaking achievements, including most points, goals, and assists in a single season, have cemented his status as the greatest player of all time. Without Gretzky, I doubt the United States would have ever adopted the national pastime of Canada to which they call Hockey. In fact, I would go as far to say that without Gretzky being sold to the Los Angeles Kings, it’s possible the Oilers would have won more Stanley Cups and even beat the record of consecutive Cup wins . It took the Great One becoming known in hockey in the USA to change Hockey forever in the United States. Gretzky’s career remains unparalleled in terms of records, awards, and impact on the sport, and his legacy continues to inspire new generations of hockey players.

As the face of the NHL’s new generation, he has the potential to surpass even the greatest legends of the game. The one thing still ailing him in the halls of history is 1 or more Stanley Cups and the yet to be awarded many awards he will have over the next 10 years of his career. In fact I would venture to say I would expect McDavid to finish his career with the second highest amount of trophies in a hockey career.

Each player’s unique contributions and achievements have shaped hockey in significant ways, making direct comparisons challenging but highlighting their exceptional impact on the sport. Gordie Howe was a machiine and will always be known as Mr Hockey for many reasons but he was 1 player shy of making the top 5 ICONIC players, at least in the opinion and eyes of this writer.
