THE CAT’S Weekly Update – June 22, 2023

Hello everyone,

Hope you are all having a wonderful day. We have some news from around the league and the world of Hockey.

  1. The New York Rangers have announced that Peter Laviolette will be the next Head coach of the team. He is coming in as the 37th coach in franchise history and has a 752-503-25-150 record in that time, making him the eighth-winningest coach in NHL history, first amongst his fellow American peers. He has also coached a lot of the teams in the Metropolitan division, and has won 1 Stanley Cup in 2006 with the Carolina Hurricanes. He will be joined by Dan Muse and Phil Housley, who have been added as assistant coaches.
  1. The Hockey Hall of Fame have announced their nominees for the 2023 inductee, with players and builders who made impactful contributions to the game of hockey. Henrik Lundqvist, Caroline Ouellette, Tom Barrasso, Mike Vernon and Pierre Turgeon headline the hall’s goaltender-heavy class, and former NHL head coach Ken Hitchcock and the late Pierre Lacroix, who was both an agent and executive, will go in as builders this year. The induction ceremony will take place on November 13 in Toronto. Again we are missing Alexander Mogilny within the HOF, and we here at Two Guys hope he is inducted sooner rather than later.
  1. A Big Congratulations to the Hershey Bears, who have won the Calder Cup by defeating the Coachella Valley Firebirds 3-2 in Game 7 of the Calder Cup Finals at Acrisure Arena. Mike Vecchione (who played 1 NHL game for the Washington Capitals) scored at 16:19 of overtime to win it for the Bears. We wish them all the best and hope they get to celebrate in style.
  1. The NHL will host the 2023 Awards announced a lineup of hockey stars, country music artists and entertainers that will be held on Monday, June 26 in Nashville.
  1. We have some minor signings in the NHL, starting with the St. Louis Blues signing forward Adam Gaudette to a one-year, two-way $775,000 contract extension. The Arizona Coyotes signed forward Michael Carcone to a two-year, $1.55MM contract extension and the Tampa Bay Lightning have signed Gabriel Fortier to a one-year, two-way contract worth $775,000. Finally, the Columbus Blue Jackets have signed forward Mathieu Olivier to a two-year, $2.2 million contract extension with an (AAV of $1.1 million) while the Buffalo Sabres have signed forward Lukas Rousek to a two-year, $1.5 million dollar contract (with an AAV of $775,000).
