Good morning Hockey fans,
Hope all is well with you. We are back with more news from around the league as we had a busy weekend of hockey.
- The New York Islanders have hired Patrick Roy Patrick Roy as their new head coach. This comes after firing Lane Lambert and the team losing 4 games in a row and 6 out of the last 7, leading the team to fall out of the playoff spot. Roy, who previously coached the Colorado Avalanche, was on the radar for a few organizations and got his first win over the weekend when they beat the Dallas Stars in overtime. They are currently 20-15-11 and 4th in the Metro division.
- The Edmonton Oilers have now broken the Canadian record by winning 13 games in a row, after beating the Calgary Flames on Saturday night during Hockey Night in Canada, surpassing the 1967-68 Montreal Canadiens, who won 12 in a row. This is big for a team who started 2-9-1 and fired their former head coach Jay Woodcroft. Can they continue this? There are also rumours that Corey Perry will be signing a contract with the team in the coming days for about the league minimum, and will bolster their bottom 6 depth. This will be an interesting team, who right now is firing on all cylinders. They will have to waive someone, but it looks like they will get a boost from Perry in the lineup.
- The NHL has also announced today that they have fined Toronto Maple Leafs defenceman Conor Timmins for cross-checking Brandon Tanev during their game last night, after winning 3-1. Toronto, who have been on a Western swing, have been struggling in the last little bit, but they got some good goaltending from Ilya Samsonov, who has struggled recently but had a .941 SV%. He is slowly building up his confidence, as Woll continues to be out and they have Jones who has been playing the bulk of the games.
- William Lockwood of the Florida Panthers has been suspended for 3 games by the NHL for his hit on Marc-Andre Fleury. Lockwood went behind the net to play a puck early in the first period and hit Fleury, injuring the veteran goalie, after contact with the head. The team also lost 6 to 4 and this might affect the market for Minnesota being able to trade him.
- The PWHL continues to keep going, and it was the heroics of Rougeau who scored the big game winner as Toronto beat Montreal in the 1st-ever PWHL shootout in the league. They currently sit at 2-0-1-1 and will play on Wednesday versus Minnesota, while Toronto will have a change to make grounds on Tuesday versus Ottawa.
