THE CAT’S Weekly Update – December 4, 2024

Welcome back hockey fans! Welcome to Week 14 of our news from around the world of hockey and around the league. We’ve had a busy time in the world of hockey, so let’s jump right in:

  1. The Dallas Stars have announced that centre Tyler Seguin is scheduled to undergo hip surgery and is expected to miss the next 4 to 6 months without the team. The surgery is to repair a left side FAI (femoral acetabular impingement) and the left side hip labrum. Seguin, 32, has put up 9 goals and 11 assists over 19 games this season with the team, and is going into his 15th season in the league. This will provide the team with some cap as the Stars sit 3rd in the Central Division with a 16-8-0 record.
  1. Today, the 4 Nations tournament will be announced and it will feature players for all 4 of the nations (Canada, Sweden, Finland and USA). The tournament is in February 2025 and we will see the best on best with the teams and see who comes out on top. What are your predictions? Please let us know.
  1. Patrik Laine of the Montreal Canadiens scored in his debut on Tuesday night, as they faced off against the New York Islanders, winning 2-1 in overtime. Laine, 26, missed the first 24 games of the regular season after sustaining a left knee sprain during the pre-season play against the Toronto Maple Leafs. He can be an offensive threat and this will definitely bolster the Canadiens offence and top 6. We hope to see many more goals.
  1. The Carolina Hurricanes have signed goaltender Dustin Tokarski to 1-year, $750,000 two-way contract. Tokarski, 35, has a record of 4-1-0 with a 1.61 goals-against average and .933 save percentage in five AHL games this year and has played in 80 career NHL games.
  1. The Minnesota Wild have traded for young defenseman David Jiricek and a 5th-round pick in the 2025 NHL Draft from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for prospect defenseman Daemon Hunt, a 1st round pick in the 2025 NHL Entry Draft (Top 5 Protected), a 3rd round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, a 4th-round pick in the 2026 NHL Entry and a 2nd round pick in the 2027 NHL Draft. This allows Jiricek to have a fresh start and allow Columbus to stock up on some draft capital. But both teams have benefited from this trade, but who do you think won?
  1. In another minor trade, the The Chicago Blackhawks have traded AHLer and prospect Ryder Rolston to the Nashville Predators for “future considerations”. This is to provide a fresh start for Rolston and it shows that he may go to the Nashville farm team the  Milwaukee Admirals. We wish him all the best.
  1. The Boston Bruins celebrated their 100-year anniversary with a Centennial Game against one of their oldest rivals the Montreal Canadiens where they won 6 to 3 and had a whole celebration with a lot of the iconic and historical players in their franchise, attend. This was a fun celebration and this is a team that knows how to play fun hockey. It was well done.
  1. The Vancouver Canucks captain just keeps making history, as he has become the  Canuck’s all-time leader in assists by a defenceman with 311 assists, surpassing Alex Edler. This is an incredible accomplishment and seeing how good he is, we wouldn’t be surprised if he doubles that number.
  1. Similarly, in Tampa Bay, Victor Hedman has also reached a milestone by having 590 assists, when they faced off against the Toronto Maple Leafs, passing Martin St. Louis (588). Hedman has four goals, 18 assists, 59 shots and 43 blocks in 23 games this season. Hedman, who is an elite defenceman and will play for Team Sweden, and definitely will end up in the Hall of Fame, but as the new Captain for the Lightning, as they are 12-9-2 and will continue to try to win one more Stanley Cup.
