Hello everyone,
Hope all is well with you. We have some news from around the league and in the world of hockey.
- The Anaheim Ducks have signed forward Troy Terry to a 7-year, $49 million contract extension (with an AAV of $7 million) avoiding arbitration and gets them to the cap floor Terry, 25, had 23 goals and 38 assists in 70 games last season, after a slow start previously for Terry. He has a total of 75 goals and 101 assists in 274 games with the Ducks, who drafted him in the fifth round in 2015. He is a good depth piece and one of the core pieces moving forward as the Ducks rebuild. They still have to sign Trevor Zegras and Jamie Drysdale.
- The Boston Bruins have locked up goaltender Jeremy Swayman, as an arbitrator awarded him a 1-year deal valued at $3.475 million. Swayman, 24, had an excellent season when he went 24-6-4 record with a 2.27 GAA and .920 SV%. He ended up 4th in Vezina voting this season, after his teammate Linus Ullmark won the award. Swayman will want to have another big year because he will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights again next summer. They also sign Trent Frederic to a two-year, $4.6M deal with Bruins, avoiding arbitration. Frederic, 25, has 29 goals and 54 points in 198 NHL games. He was drafted by the Bruins, who drafted him 29th overall in 2016.
- The Edmonton Oilers have locked up Ryan McLeod to a 2 year, $4.2 million dollar contract (with an AAV of $2.1 million). McLeod, 23, put up 11 goals and 12 assists in 57 games last season and has 45 points in 138 career games with the Oilers, after being drafted 40th overall in 2018. They also announced that Jeff Jackson will be the new Oilers CEO of Hockey Operations, and will report directly to Katz and serve as an Alternate Governor on the NHL Board of Governors. Jackson has an extensive resume that will benefit the team. He himself played professionally for 8 years, and practiced corporate and entertainment law at a leading national law firm.
- The Pittsburgh Penguins sign forward Drew O’Connor to a 2-year, $1.85 million contract, also avoiding arbitration. O’Connor, 25, put up 5 goals and 6 assists in 46 games with the Penguins last season, and split his time playing for the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins of the American Hockey League, where he had 8 goals and 14 assists in 20 games.
- It’s also already August and hockey training camp is just around the corner so we are getting closer to the start of hockey real soon. We can’t wait.
