Pawel ‘the Cat’ Weekly Hockey Update – October 29, 2025

Hey everyone, hope you are doing well. We are back at it tonight for another great Episode 8 Season 7 of Two Guys & Hockey Talk, where we dive into the stories around the world of hockey. It’s been a busy few days as the NHL season is well underway and we have some stories from the past week

  1. Cooley Locked Up Long-term – The Utah Mammoth have extended Logan Cooley to an eight-year, $80 million dollar extension (with an AAV of $10 million). Cooley, 21, has put up 8 goals and 4 assists through 11 games this season, and has put up 53 goals and 68 assists in 168 games over his three seasons. He will continue to help the team to push for a playoff spot as they are 8-3-0.
  1. Harley Stays Put – The other big extension we have seen get done is that the Dallas Stars have extended defenceman Thomas Harley to an eight-year, $84.696 million contract extension (with an AAV of $10.587 million). Harley, 24, is in his fifth season with the club and has 1 goal and 7 assists in nine games so far this season and averages around  23 minutes of ice time. Harley also suited up for Canada at the 4 Nations Face-Off last February, tallying 1 assist in two games, all while winning a gold medal.
  1. Connor Bedard’s first NHL hat trick – In a wild game last night, Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks recorded his first NHL hat-trick in a 7-3 win over the Ottawa Senators. He finished the game with four points,  signalling that his rookie breakout might be real and showcasing his talent. It comes early in the season but shows that Chicago has taken a step in the right direction.
  2. Kesler Legal Woes – Former NHL player Ryan Kesler has been charged with two counts of fourth-degree criminal sexual conduct in Michigan, where the alleged incident took place on January 1, 2025, involving a 16-year-old minor. This situation is still evolving, but this does raise broader discussions about conduct and accountability in professional sports, especially after the Hockey Canada sexual assault scandal.
  1. Penn State University Women’s Team have a Hot Start – The Penn State women’s program has opened the 2025-26 season with a 10-0-0 record, for the first time in program history they’ve reached double-digit wins this early. Senior captain Tessa Janecke is leading the charge with seven goals and seven assists through ten games, riding an eight-game point streak while forward Danica Maynard (from British Columbia) has made an immediate impact with 3 goals & 11 assists so far, which speaks to the depth of their team.
  1. Everett Silvertips and the Swift Current Broncos re-trade – The Everett Silvertips have acquired forward Rylan Gould from Swift Current, completing a re-worked trade originally arranged back on May 8, 2025 in exchange for a conditional 2026 first-round pick and the rights to 2009-born forward Damen Vanderberg to Swift Current. Swift Current originally acquired Gould’s rights on May 8 in exchange for a 2026 first‐round pick and a 2009-born forward (Kasey Gleim). Gould posted 66 points (29 G, 37 A) in 60 regular‐season games last season with Swift Current, along with 3 points in 5 playoff games.
  1. The Frozen Frenzy – On October 28, all 32 NHL teams played on the same night in the annual Frozen Frenzy event, with a triple-header being held on ESPN. This is a major NHL promotional push to help engage fans, build narrative momentum early in the season, and gives the league a promotional “tent-pole” event. It was a good night of hockey but was overshadowed by the World Series.
