Pawel ‘the Cat’ Weekly Hockey Update – February 18, 2026

Hey everyone, hope you are doing well. Tonight, we are back again for another great Episode 22 of Season 7 of Two Guys & Hockey Talk for the first episode of the year. It has been a very busy time in the world of hockey so let’s get into it:

  1. Olympic’s Hockey – So far we have had a great showing of both men’s and women’s hockey at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan–Cortina, as Sweden advanced to the men’s hockey quarterfinals after defeating Latvia, setting up a high-profile showdown with the United States later today, while Czechia secured a tight win over Denmark to book its place in the knockout round and will face Canada. Team Canada now has taken the win over Czechia and wants to continue to look dominant in Olympic play, with veteran star Sidney Crosby being injured.
  1. Women’s Gold Final – Speaking of the 2026 Winter Olympics, women’s hockey continues to be a major storyline, with Team USA dominating in semifinal play to secure a spot in the gold‑medal game and keeping its run of Olympic hardware alive versus Team Canada on Thursday.
  1. AHL Major suspensions – In the American Hockey League, Chicago Blackhawks minor-league goaltender Stanislav Berezhnoy and Coachella Valley Firebirds forward David Goyette were each suspended 20 games for violating the league’s Performance Enhancing Substance Program, marking two significant disciplinary actions under the AHL’s anti-doping policy. In other news, young defenseman Dmitri Simashev has earned a spot in the AHL All-Star Classic, signaling his strong play early in his professional career.
  1. KHL World Games in China: The KHL World Games are set to take place in early March, with the Shanghai Dragons hosting games against Sibir on March 5 and Barys on March 7 as part of the championship schedule abroad. This should showcase some of the best talent in the game. Also veteran forward Sheldon Rempal has returned to the KHL, signing with Salavat Yulaev Ufa for the remainder of the season.
  1. Paul Coffey returning to Edmonton – It sounds like Paul Coffey is officially returning to the Edmonton Oilers coaching staff, rejoining the team’s bench as part of the staff after speculation and discussion about his potential return during the Oilers’ Olympic break. This comes after the team has struggled to really find their footing and get some win streaks going this season. Coffey had previously moved into an advisory role with the Oilers after serving as an assistant, and his return to the coaching staff marks a notable reunion between the legendary former player and the organization.
  2. CHL Rising Stars – In the Canadian Hockey League, two of the brightest draft-eligible stars are making major noise in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League: Caleb Desnoyers and Justin Carbonneau. Both forwards have been among the league’s most productive offensive players, consistently ranking near the top in goals and points while driving play for their respective clubs. Their combination of scoring touch, hockey IQ, and pro-ready skill sets has solidified them as prominent names in early projections for the upcoming NHL Draft. Scouts have highlighted Desnoyers’ two-way reliability and playmaking ability, while Carbonneau’s size, shot, and power-forward style continue to boost his draft stock as the QMJHL season pushes toward the playoffs.
