Bruins Stand Pat at Deadline

What a difference a year can make. After a busy deadline last year that saw Boston move on from long time Bruins Charlie Coyle, Brandon Carlo and team captain Brad Marchand, things were much different this time. With the 2026 NHL trade deadline now in the rearview mirror, it’s time to look at why the Bruins had a quiet day. Simply put, this was not the deadline for the Bruins to add at what the cost of doing business was. With the team in year one of a retool and clearly having a better than anticipated season, Sweeney decided to reward the current roster by not subtracting.

“If we could have improved the future of our hockey club, I would have looked at it as pragmatically as possible and done it,” Sweeney said during his post deadline media availability. “But that being said, it wasn’t just about collecting any asset and take away from the fabric of our group.”

Sweeney knows this team better than anyone. He also knows that this team is ahead of schedule but still far from being a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. Aside from a couple of minor league deals, Sweeney chose to be conservative.

“Getting our organizational base back to where we felt it needed to get to was all part of that,” Sweeney said of the process that began last season. “Started last year. Hopefully it continues. That is not to diminish where our players are currently at. Because there’s a lot of those guys that have had really good years because they’ve taken advantage of the opportunity of being part of the Boston Bruins. That’s what you get excited about. Now, we have to continue to build.”

Seeing the prices that were paid on the players that moved, the Bruins sticking to their plan and not dealing any future assets was the absolute right decision. Though the GM did engage in meaningful dialogue to at least see what was out there.

“It doesn’t mean we didn’t explore an awful lot of things, to be perfectly honest and truthful, because we would have liked to continue to add to the group. It just didn’t materialize.”

It sounds like for the Bruins to have done so the asking price would’ve been too steep for Sweeney to consider. With Boston holding the Toronto Maple Leaf’s top 5 protected pick this June and no certainty that their own first won’t find its way into the draft lottery, the risk in moving one or both was too great.

Speaking to the four first round picks the Bruins currently possess in 2026 and 2027, Sweeney said; “We didn’t move them because they weren’t exactly burning a hole in my pocket. But that being said, we explored an awful lot of opportunities. If we felt (It would improve) our team moving forward and adding to our group, we would have done something if it aligned for us.”

Call it boring, just don’t call it the wrong decision. The Bruins are committed to what they have started and for fans such as me, standing pat this season made all the sense in the world. Even with UFA’s Viktor Arvidsson and Andrew Peeke potentially walking away this summer, Sweeney decided to keep the group intact. With only a three point lead for the second Wild Card position, Boston will be in a fight with several teams to secure a postseason spot.

“We had charted a course last year that we knew this wasn’t going to be one and done. Our intentions were to get back to where we are and be the most competitive group we can. The guys have done a great job, the coaching staff. We’re still excited about that. I think our odds are if we play the right way we’re supposed to play, that we were before the break, that we’re going to be a tough out and get in [to the playoffs]. That’s the challenge to the group.”

There’s more work to be done, but so far Sweeney has the Bruins going in the right direction. Ahead of schedule.

The Lookahead

With Columbus hot on their heels, Boston will need a strong week to stay in the playoff picture. They are home to host LA and SJ on Tuesday and Thursday before traveling to Washington for another Saturday Matinee with the Caps. Next Monday night they are in New Jersey. Winnable games for them certainly.

All eyes should be on Boston College this week also as top prospect James Hagens could be joining the Bruins upon the Eagle’s season’s conclusion.
