Hey everyone, hope you are doing well. We are back at it tonight for another great Episode 7 Season 7 of Two Guys & Hockey Talk, where we dive into the stories around the world of hockey. It’s been a busy few days as the NHL season is well underway and we have some stories from the past week
- Brad Marchand returns home – Marchand (of the Florida Panthers) made his return back to TD Garden to play the Boston Bruins and was visibly emotional during the tribute video and crowd reception that he got. He was a leader and captain for the team and really wore his heart on the sleeve and ended up helping the team win 4-3 against his former club. He left the club last season at the trade deadline and went on to win the Stanley Cup, and ended up playing 1,090 games and scoring 422 goals and amassed 976 points in his time there.
- The NHL 3 Stars – The league has a weekly 3 Stars they recognize who have great weeks in the game and this week it was awarded to Dylan Larkin of the Detroit Red Wings (First Star), Jack Eichel of the Vegas Golden Knights (Second), and Scott Wedgewood of the Colorado Avalanche (Third). All 3 clubs are having excellent starts to the season as they try to get ahead in the standings.
- Sidney Crosby continues to shine – Crosby has becomes Penguins all-time points leader for the Pittsburgh Penguins, as he surpasses Mario Lemieux to become the all-time leader in combined regular-season and playoff points for the Pittsburgh Penguins, scoring his 1,896th point. He also reached the 700 career goal mark, which is a remarkable feature as he tries to lead his team this season. The team is 5-2-0 so far this season, amazing for a team that was supposed to be rebuilding. He continues to build a heck of a resume.
- NHL cancels 2026 Olympic send-off event – The NHL has announced that they are cancelling their previously planned 2026 Olympic send-off event at UBS Arena (originally in lieu of the All-Star Game) so that players/coaches can focus exclusively on the Olympic tournament. This is because in an Olympic year, the NHL is trying to adapt its calendar, commercial partnerships, and big-event strategy to gain more global exposure and increase their media rights. I’m sure we will see another All Star Game but it may be a while.
- Rookies making early impact – With the new season in full swing, we have some seen great rookies showcase their talents, and one of the key players is 1st overall pick is 18 year-old Matthew Schaefer of the New York Islanders who has 2 goals and 5 assists in 6 games, tying the record for the longest career-opening streak by a defenseman in NHL history. He is also earning a lot of ice time, with the trust of his head coach Patrick Roy. This is great for a team who are 3-3-0 so far and they are trying to stay competitive in all games. Another player to note is Frank Nazar of the Chicago Blackhawks who now ha 3 goals and 4 assists in 7 games, and has been a threat when on the ice, and helped Chicago take that next step as the team sits 3-2-2 and faces off against the Tampa Bay Lightning.
- Trade & roster movement rumors heating up early – Although we are only a few weeks into the new season, it sounds like there is some movement potentially happening, as Elliotte Friedman reporting that the Ottawa Senators reportedly made a long-term offer to Shane Pinto and his cap (a max 8 years) though details and alignment remain unsettled. This is after a great start for him after having 7 goals and 1 assist in 7 games so far and taking a bigger step this year (after their captain Brady Tkachuk is out due to a wrist injury).
- World Girls Ice Hockey Weekend – The IIHF hosted its annual World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend this past weekend (from October 17-19, 2025), inviting thousands of girls in over 30 countries on six continents to try hockey for the first time or take part in special events. This is a great initiative and great way to grow the game as it helps the grassroots efforts of building hockey in new communities, and grow the women’s leagues or stronger national teams outside the traditional hockey markets.
