Pawel ‘the Cat’ Weekly Hockey Update – September 10, 2025

Hey everyone, hope you are all doing well. The NHL season is almost upon up and we are back tonight for Season 7 Episode 1 of Two Guys & Hockey Talk, where we dive into the stories around the world of hockey. Therefore, some of the news that has been taking place over the past few months and things that we will be exploring this season are:

  1. The Evander Kane LTIR Investigation is now Closed – Assistant GM Bill Daly has announced that the NHL has decided to not take any further actions with the Edmonton Oilers and how they handled Evander Kane’s LTIR situation (believing the matter to be closed). It was alleged that the team used the cap space to make deadline acquisitions and later traded Kane to Vancouver, which drew some scrutiny from others in the league.
  1. Connor Unsigned – Speaking of the Edmonton Oilers, there continue to be no contract for their captain Connor McDavid going into this season, something that many pundits didn’t think it would take. The goal is that the team prepare themselves for a deep run this season along with bolstering their goaltending and adding more youth into their lineup through prospects. We will see if this will be an ongoing discussion or if a deal can still be reached by the end of the month (albeit short term).
  1. The PWHL Returns – It sounds like the 2025-26 PWHL season will begin the weekend of November 21 to the 23, with training camps are said to be opening up on Nov. 7. Although a schedule has yet to be released there are a lot of fans ready to see the league get back and going again, and it is possible there may be more than 30 games played.
  1. Calgary Wolf – The Calgary Flames have signed their young goaltender Dustin Wolf to a 7-year, $52.5M contract (with an AAV $7.5 million) starting with the 2026–27 season, cementing the goaltender position in their rebuild. Wolf, 24, had a phenomenal year last season and went 29-16-8 in 53 games and had a .910 SV% and a 2.64 GAA in those 53 games. He is being seen as a big part of the Flames future. We wish him all the best as he helps the team try to make the post-season.
  1. Retirements Announced – We’ve had a few players announce their retirement from the NHL in the coming past few days such as Derek Ryan (centre), Tyson Barrie (defenceman), Anton Khudobin (goaltender) and Kyle Clifford (forward). We wish them all the best in all of their futures and hope to see them around the game of hockey in some capacity.
  1. Legend Ken Dryden has passed away – The hockey world has lost a legend; Ken Dryden, a former Canadiens goalie and six-time Stanley Cup champion, who passed away at the age of 78. Known for his brilliant skills on the ice, intellectual pursuits off it, and later roles in politics and broadcasting, along with being an author, Dryden’s legacy spans far beyond the crease and he will be missed. We wish his family our thoughts and condolences.
  1. Kaprizov No Deal – It sounds like the young winger Kirill Kaprizov has rejected a record-breaking offer from the Minnesota Wild (a reported 8-year, $128 million dollar contract) making him potentially the richest player in NHL history. What then will be his decision and what will he actually sign for? We don’t know but we will do our best to report it.

Thoughts? Questions? Suggestions? Then remember to tune in each week to get all the latest news in the world of hockey as we start up Season 7 of the Podcast each Wednesday night at 7pm MST, where we dive into some of these great topics, interview many in the game and so much more.
