The Centennial Bruins

On Sunday, The Boston Bruins officially ended their year long celebration of the team’s centennial season in style. With team legends and some family members from each era in attendance, the Bruins put on a heck of a hockey game as they defeated their one-hundred-year-old rivals from Montreal by a 6-3 score.  A game they absolutely had to win given the occasion. The December 1st 2024 victory over the Canadiens comes exactly one hundred years to the day after their first game in franchise history vs the then Montreal Maroons, also a victory by 2-1 score. Given the struggles these modern-day Bruins have faced this season, an electric TD Garden was a welcome site. Fans of the team got what they have sorely missed this season on Sunday and that is something they’re hoping to see more of now that the league schedule has flipped to December.

The weekend itself was deemed a big success as the Bruins and their PR team absolutely nailed it with great content. Have you seen the drone work by the content team released Sunday morning? If not, it’s a must watch. The Bruins social media released the work via their platforms in the morning prior to the afternoon game itself. Truly extraordinary and sure to please the eye of any hockey fan, young or old, Bruins fan or not, it is aptly named Soaring Through History: Bruins Centennial Game Drone Film.

One day earlier the Bruins brass were on hand to debut a new statue on Causeway St to join the famous tribute to Bobby Orr soaring through the air in 1970. This statue of a giant bear is not only to symbolize one hundred years of the Bruins, but also of the culture Boston is proud to own. “Today, as we unveil this new Bear statue in celebration of the Boston Bruins’ first 100 years, we mark not just a milestone in our team’s history, but a symbol of the enduring spirit of this franchise and its fans”, said Boston Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs. “We are proud that this statue will greet generations of hockey fans, players and all who pass by, reminding them of the rich legacy we have built together and the exciting future that lies ahead.” The statue stands 6-feet tall, 10-feet long and weighs 3,500 pounds. Bruins management, players and fans all hope this new addition to the arena grounds can be a good luck charm as the franchise moves on from the first one hundred years.

Bruin’s legends Bobby Orr, Phil Esposito, Rick Middleton, Wayne Cashman, Johnny Bucyk, Willie O’ree, Terry O’Reilly, Ray Bourque, Cam Neely and Patrice Bergeron were all in attendance to officially “seal the fault” on the centennial celebrations. Jason Allison was there too and for some reason I loved that touch! Speaking to the media many of the former Bruins loved what the weekend brought. Bruins all time goal scoring leader Johnny Bucyk said it best: “This celebration weekend has been unbelievable”.
