THE CAT’S Weekly Update – October 23, 2024

Welcome back hockey fans! Welcome to Week 8 of our news from around the world of hockey and around the league. Can you believe we are already into the 2nd weekend of the hockey season? Well we have lots to get to, so let’s jump right in. The news from around the league this week:

  1. The Florida Panthers have announced that they have extended head coach Paul Maurice to a multi-year deal (although the details have yet to be released). This comes after the team won their first ever Stanley Cup in the franchise and also went to the final the year before. Maurice, 57, is a fiery and smart hockey coach who has gone 98-58-15 in the regular season and 29-16 with the Cats. We wish him all the best as the Panthers try to repeat this season.
  1. The St. Louis Blues announced today that they will be without  Robert Thomas for a while as their top centre was placed on IR after Tuesday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets where he sustained a right ankle fracture. This will be a big loss for the team moving forward as they play Toronto on Thursday with the return of Craig Berube after being fired by the team. Should be a good game to tune into.
  1. In other injury news, the Seattle Kraken have placed defenceman Vince Dunn on long-term injured reserve and called up Cale Fleury to fill in as the Kraken are 4-3-0 to start the season and trying to roll their way back to the playoffs.
  1. Also the Utah Hockey CLub will be without both their defenceman and 1st PP specialist Sean Durzi, along with John Marino. Both have undergone successful surgery but won’t be back for a few months back with the club. This will be a big blow as that was a key part of their backend, and this will be the first test of adversity for the club running on all cylinders out of the gate. The team has been super fun to watch and the crowds in Salt Lake have really supported their team.
  1. Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers played his 1,000th game last Saturday as the club faced and beat the Philadelphia Flyers. Myers, 34, who is a right-shot defender and was selected 12th overall in 2008 by the Buffalo Sabres, and played for Winnipeg Jets before ending up with the Canucks. Already in his 16th season, he has carved out a strong career for himself and played in the top 4 most of his career and has always been a big body on the ice. He also had a great time while playing with the Kelowna Rockets. We hope he continues to play at a high level and wanted to congratulate Myers.
  1. As always, there is a lot more news so make sure to tune in for our aired Season 6, Episode 8 of Two Guys & Hockey Talk. We dive into some great topics and much more.
